Governor General and Lady Cosgrove visit Gawura

12 September, 2017

Gawura staff and students were privileged to welcome His Excellency General, the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) and Her Excellency Lady Cosgrove to the school today.

Gawura students, together with some students from SACS Junior School, sang ‘We are Australian’ in Wiradjuri and English for their Excellencies.

Sir Peter then addressed the students, inspiring them to believe anything they want to achieve is possible.

All children want the same things – good friends, learning (opportunities) and to have fun learning,” he said. “When you finish school, you want to have a happy and productive life. And who’s to say there’s not a Prime Minister sitting here today or a school principal? The grounding you get here will build on your sense of self-worth. It’s important to be proud of yourself, your friends and your school.

The Gawura students then welcomed Sir Peter and Lady Cosgrove into their classroom, where the students read them a story.

Gawura secondary students, part of St Andrew’s Cathedral School’s secondary school, then joined their Excellencies for a short Q&A style round-table discussion. Afterwards, gifts were exchanged and the two senior school representatives, Jacqueline Jacky (Year 11, pictured) and Rhianna Kinchela-Packer (Year 12) were delighted to be presented with a special Governor-General’s medallion.
