Kaleb (Year 1)

Kaleb came to Gawura in 2015 as a new Kindergarten student, however, he struggled significantly and the decision was made to hold him back and repeat Kindergarten in 2016. As a result of this decision, Kaleb made the most progress out of all the students in Kindergarten in 2016. He was awarded the Academic Achievement Infants award in Gawura at the 2016 end of year Evening of Celebration and Prizegiving. His teacher Ms Naden, commented “the targeted reading levels in Kindergarten are between 1 and 14 and currently Kaleb is at level 22. In a recent spelling test his results placed him at the level of a 10-year-old.” We are so proud of Kaleb and his achievements.

Joylara (Year 3)

Joylara is a bright, shining star in Gawura. She is full of life and determination and is always working hard to do her best. We asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up and she replied, “I would like to be a Prime Minister, my mum always said I would be a good leader, I just want to see what it feels like to be a Prime Minister”.

Raymond (Year 9)

Raymond started Gawura in 2008 in Kindergarten and has a younger brother Joshua who is now in Year 3. Raymond is an energetic and independent student. He focuses this energy into sport, playing in the Under 15 Rugby team. Recently, while on holidays, Raymond saved a friend from drowning. The boys were swimming when his friend failed to resurface after going underwater. Raymond pulled his unconscious friend from the water and saved his life. It’s this kind of bravery and independence that makes Raymond unique.

Raymond will be the first member of his family to graduate from school and maybe the first one in his family to go to university. This, in itself, is a huge achievement. Raymond is achieving great milestones and history for his family.

Keon (Year 12)

Keon came to Gawura in Year 4 and was one of the naughtiest kids we have seen in the Gawura classroom. Keon persevered and now, having reached Year 12, is one of our best students. He is a very determined young man and excels in theatre and music.

Last year Keon was chosen to perform at the Sydney Opera House in the Indigenous opera Pecan Summer, which was written and composed by Deborah Cheetham, one of our Gawura Ambassadors. His music skills are ever increasing and we are excited to see where life takes him after school.
