Volunteer in Gawura

There are many different ways you can help Gawura by volunteering

Block

People who volunteer weekly are 16% happier, according to the London School of Economics. Adults aged 50+ who give back live longer than those who don’t.  Gawura has wonderful teachers and students  . . . . . are there any more reason we need to give to encourage you to volunteer in Gawura?

Morning Reading with Gawura students

Reading with a Gawura student is truly the nicest way to start the day.  Volunteers from the community and our corporate partners can read with our students from Kindergarten to Year 6 any morning of the week from 8:10am for 30 minutes.

Volunteers listen to one or children read in small groups read to help with difficult words and comprehension.  You just need a Working With Children Check, to complete our induction and a happy smile!

If you have any questions or wish to sign up please do so here:  https://gawura.nsw.edu.au/apply-to-volunteer/

Secondary Students – Gawura Tutor Program

Our students on a Gawura scholarship in secondary school have access to the Gawura Homework Club which is on three afternoons a week.  It’s a chance for students to come together, check in with our Aboriginal Education Mentor and receive assistance with their homework, organisation and class preparation.

Our students have skills and needs that vary and would benefit from weekly tutoring in subjects they find difficult.  We are looking for an expert, tertiary educated person or someone with the kind of knowledge that would benefit years 7 to 9 students in one of the following subject areas:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Science
  • Spanish
  • French

Preferably this would be a weekly commitment of 45mins to 1hr once a week per subject.

Please contact Matt, our Aboriginal Education Mentor if you would like further information;  mhammond@sacs.nsw.edu.au

Easter Hat Making Volunteers – Monday 6 April 2020 11:45am to 1:15pm

The most fun you’ll have all year  . . . . .come along and help our students make their Easter hats for the 2020 Easter Hate Parade.  Hotly contested, our annual Easter hat parade is held with the St Andrew’s Cathedral Junior School in St Andrew’s Cathedral just before the Easter holidays commence.

Our Gawura children love to help and our teachers would love the assistance of a corporate partner or group of volunteers with this fun job.  Bring your own resources and we can supply the glue and staples.

Contact Catherine Gunning if you can help out cgunning@sacs.nsw.edu.au

Corporate volunteering days

Gawura is happy to work with your organisation to tailor a volunteer day with our Gawura students and our secondary Gawura scholarship holders.  Your staff can be a teachers aide for the day or a tutor to our secondary students.  We have the capacity run these once per term.  Please contact Catherine Gunning for further information. cgunning@sacs.nsw.eud.au
